Formula
P&L (Long) = (Exit − Entry) × Position Size
P&L (Short) = (Entry − Exit) × Position Size
Return % = Price Change ÷ Entry Price × 100For a long trade, profit is made when exit is above entry. For a short trade, profit is made when exit is below entry. Multiply the price difference by position size to get total dollar P&L. The return percentage is relative to the cost basis (entry price × position size).
Worked Example
Direction: Long Entry: $50.00 Exit: $55.00 Position size: 100 shares Price change = $55 − $50 = $5.00 P&L = $5.00 × 100 = $500.00 profit Return % = $5 ÷ $50 × 100 = 10% Cost basis = 100 × $50 = $5,000 Note: Does not include commissions. Subtract brokerage fees for net P&L.
