Pivot Point Calculator
The pivot point calculator computes the central pivot point and three support and resistance levels for the next trading session based on the previous day's high, low, and close. Pivot points are one of the oldest and most widely used technical analysis tools — they are objective price levels derived purely from price action, with no parameters to adjust.
How to use this calculator
- 1
Enter the previous day's high
The highest price traded during the prior session.
- 2
Enter the previous day's low
The lowest price traded during the prior session.
- 3
Enter the previous day's close
The closing price of the prior session (for stocks, this is the official 4pm close).
- 4
Read your pivot levels
The calculator outputs the pivot point (PP) plus R1, R2, R3 (resistance) and S1, S2, S3 (support).
Formula
PP = (High + Low + Close) ÷ 3
R1 = 2 × PP − Low
R2 = PP + (High − Low)
R3 = High + 2 × (PP − Low)
S1 = 2 × PP − High
S2 = PP − (High − Low)
S3 = Low − 2 × (High − PP)The pivot point is the simple average of the previous day's high, low, and close. Resistance levels are progressively higher prices derived from the pivot and range; support levels are progressively lower. The wider the prior day's range, the further apart the levels. R3 and S3 are extreme levels rarely reached in a normal day.
Worked Example
Previous day: High = $155.00 | Low = $148.50 | Close = $153.20 PP = ($155.00 + $148.50 + $153.20) ÷ 3 = $152.23 R1 = 2 × $152.23 − $148.50 = $155.97 R2 = $152.23 + ($155.00 − $148.50) = $158.73 R3 = $155.00 + 2 × ($152.23 − $148.50) = $162.47 S1 = 2 × $152.23 − $155.00 = $149.47 S2 = $152.23 − ($155.00 − $148.50) = $145.73 S3 = $148.50 − 2 × ($155.00 − $152.23) = $142.97
